Back of the box:

The creepiest creatures from two epic thrillers face off in the ultimate
showdown in this film directed by Paul W.S. Anderson. The fun begins when
scientists and explorers (played by a cast that includes Sanaa Lathan and
Raoul Bova) discover an ancient pyramid in Antarctica. But the structure
isn't the only behemoth in the ice. A battle between two otherworldly
populations is threatening to destroy the region and its inhabitants for good.
The Bloody Truth:

This film was destroyed by what expectation there were from the fans, but If
you watch this film with little or no understanding of both movies Alien and
Predator their is a good chance you will enjoy it.

If you're a fan boy (which you're not because you would have watched it by
now) then you will hate this movie, unless you come in with zero
expectations and want one thing, Aliens and Predators kicking the shit out
of each other. Action is what director Paul Anderson is best at and it seems
as though it's the only thing he cares about.

What you're going to get out of this movie is a handful of decent actors
dropped into a battle between two different massively famed monsters,
which regardless of the somewhat poor direction of the film you get a good
dose of gore, scares, and of course...action.
And the rest.....

From hate to dislike

Possibly one of the greatest fan-boy let downs in history AVP takes two great franchises and creates one mediocre movie.

I will admit as a fan myself of Predator and the Alien series I was filled with a sickened rage and all I could see was red after having my hopes
crushed during AVPs opening weekend.

With all the wonderful things that might have been, our dear friend Paul W. S Anderson (PWSA) created a PG, WWF style high action low story
experience targeting today’s young audience.  Like in many of his more recent films he feels like atmosphere, dialogue and characters our
unimportant second to overblown action scenes. In a fans opinion When handling such treasured characters there is no excuse for lazy filmmaking.

I believe as much as any flaw in the film it was the choice to soften the film up for a younger audiences that huts the most.  As bad as AVP2 was
the simple fact that it was geared more for an adult audience kept it much more reminiscent of the older films.

Now in a slight retraction, years later after completely accepting the fact that a great follow-up to Alien or Predator is not on the way I did find some
things to like in AVP.  The Alien Vs Predator concept had good moments and you could tell PWSA was paying some homage to both creatures and
their fans. (if only in the combat scenes)  AVP would not be a bad second tier action film if it was an original idea and he was not shitting upon our
Alien and Predator memories simultaneously.  In comparison to the follow up AVP2 the cast and acting in AVP is fantastic.  The want to see a new
Alien or Predator film on the big screen for so many fans could not help but set standards high and even I will now admit as a AVP (comic book)
based attempt at a film it is passable. (though not by todays comic book movie standards)

To sum this review up AVP was a bad movie and a legendary let-down, but if you have avoided this film or just missed it and you can completely
detach it from the original two film series AVP is a passable action film.

I just look forward to the day when like the newest comic book movies Hollywood takes seriously the potential of old horror franchises and time,
effort and in one simple word “seriousness” is given to these movies.

IT would be nice if PWSA would just stick to video game movies.
