Back of the box:
Perennial heavy Neville Brand stars as Judd, the Scripture-muttering,
one-legged owner of a backwater hotel in director Tobe Hooper's creepy
thriller. Trouble starts when a young prostitute checks in and Judd --
offended by her line of work -- promptly kills her and feeds her to his pet
crocodile. The cast of characters includes Carolyn Jones as a cathouse
madam, Robert Englund as a randy redneck and Stuart Whitman as the
clueless sheriff.
The Bloody Truth:
Much like all of Hooper’s early films the movie focus on disturbing
characters and the feeling of isolation. At one time Hooper had an
amazing talent for brining out terrifying insanity and frightening
eccentricities from his actors/charicters. Not quite sure where that went
but it is well and alive in this late 70s horror flick.
While not as complete a film as TCM it none the less delvers a 91 minute
trip fully loaded with a cast of interesting and disturbing characters. If
anything watch this film for Robert England who wonderfully portrays a
local drug dealing redneck. His early charisma and talent light up the
screen and like Hooper's directing ability you wonder where that range
faded to over the years.
