Back of the box:
Haunted by the mining-related massacre that took place there on Valentine's
Day a decade ago, Tom (Jensen Ackles) returns to his hometown to find
some closure. But no sooner does he arrive than a pickax-wielding madman
begins a new bloody killing spree. Now, many suspect that the murderous
miner has returned to claim his final victims -- including Tom. Patrick Lussier
directs this remake of the 1981 horror classic.
The Bloody Truth:
Within the horror community modern horror remakes have garnered a vary
bad reputation in recent years. The over used term “cash grab” is labeled
on many of these pointless remakes, offering us nothing new and in most
cases failing to achieve the major (or even minor) success of their
predecessors. Yet name and nostalgia alone nets millions and keeps ‘em
coming one not so bloody remake after another.
Besides the simple answer of just making a good film how can we tap into
the remake market safely? Well you remake a film from a genre famous for
cash grabbing, sexploitation, violence and gore. You remake a slasher film.
The Bloody Truth is My Bloody Valentine 3D is an over sexed, gore filled
killing fest that goes so far as to even offer up a mildly interesting story and
twist. Yes, by other films standards these are weak points but remember
those other finer written films don’t have spilled guts, bouncing breasts and
mining tools being used to excavate skulls instead of coal.
My Bloody Valentine offers up the perfect modern slasher film. In the wake
of tame PG-13 remakes, this true adult date-movie, scream-fest is a
welcome sight for fans of the nearly forgotten art of the 80’s shock-horror,
slasher genre. If you think My Bloody Valentine is just too bad to be
watched, then you are 1) not a slasher fan or 2) have truly forgotten what
most slasher films were like.
