Your Online Guide to Horror movies
|

Who is Jenn and why should we listen to her? Well, you shouldn’t. But you never know what you might find if you do. When I was teenager me and two of my friends would get together, every so often on a Friday night, and watch a horror movie. We would often select the latest fair from Jason or Michael Myers. I thought I was a pretty big fan of horror movies, that is until I met my husband. Now, I guess, I would have to consider myself the casual watcher. What I have learned from being a bystander to my husband creating this website, is that I can definitely "OD" on horror. Unfortunately, many horror movies make the characters go places and do things that most real humans would not normally do, just so they can be sliced, diced, electrocuted, blown up, swung at a tree in a sleeping bag, turned into a man eating sheep, run over by a car, etc… This is my biggest pet peeve, when I have to yell at the TV/movie, “Why Are You Doing That? Or “ What are you thinking.” Because of this, I don't have the stamina to watch every “research” movie with my husband. I have to admit that I did not have the stomach to withstand a second viewing of Dead Alive, all the way through. I pretty much bugged out when the puss landed in the custard and was then eaten. In my forthcoming reviews I will share with you why the moderate horror fan might like, for whatever reason, these selected films. By the way, I can’t stomach criticism either, so I don’t want to know what you think of my reviews or my Jewels, so if you don’t like them keep it to your self. SPOILER ALERT, my reviews contain spoilers. Keep checking back for new jewels.

Rogue: Classic Characters
I love the way this movie stated. It was like watching a professional home
movie. The characters were so well introduced and defined. Not that I loved
all the characters but they definitely had their own personalities. At the
beginning, you get to sit back and enjoy the float down the river. Of course,
the relaxing trek down of the river comes to an end when the tour group spots
an emergency flare. There was a nice, honest debate as to whether or not to
go for help or to head towards the flare. Of course, they head towards the
flare to try to help. Once they reach the troubled craft, the movie transforms
into a great creature feature. There were a couple of “why are they doing
that” moments but they weren’t too distracting. The end of the movie seemed
a little unrealistic but did not detract from the enjoyment. But if you enjoy a
horror movie where you can really sink your teeth into some great acting and
great character development you should give Rogue a taste.

Them or Ils: Tremendous Tension
Them or Ils, is a foreign film, you have to read , but if you “get off on” the
tension factor in movies, you wont want to miss this one. This movie is the
story of a small town in Romania, where a young couple is harassed by, at the
beginning we are not quite sure what, a group of hoodlums. The art of this
movie is the way the intruders seem to show up everywhere but from a logical
standpoint it never seems like they teleport or get beamed there. It all seems
very realistic and very creepy. From the minute this movie started you are on
the edge of you seat. There is slow drawn out pace to this movie that makes
you feel like you are there, like you are experiencing it. There are very few
moments in this nail biter that I thought, “I would never do that or Why are they
doing that.” The actions of the characters are very human. One of the
creepiest things about this movie is that is based on a true story. In this case I
will not reveal the shocker at the end. I think it would be a much more
enjoyable viewing experience if you found out it for yourself. This is a great,
suspenseful, horror movie but in this case you can say this is just a great
movie, that is why it is one of Jenn’s Jewels.

Realistic human reactions to the situations that develop
Tension that sustains through the entire movie
A well chosen cast

Fascinating story based on truth
Black Sheep: Goofy Gore
When my husband brought home Black Sheep, I took one look at the cover
and thought there was no way I was going to watch, much less enjoy, this
movie. He kept asking, "you wanna watch Black Sheep tonight?," fortunately, I
came up with many wonderful excuses. Then it happened, here came the
question "...Black Sheep tonight?," oh, the horror that must have been there
on my face when I realized I had no "wonderful excuse." So there I was, sitting
on the couch, thoughts running through my head, trying to think of any reason
to have to do something else. Think, Jenn, think!!! Nothing, I got nothing.
Then all of the sudden it hit me, I don't need an excuse, I was enjoying the
heck out of the dreaded Black Sheep. Now I don't want you to think this is the
next Silence of the Lambs. This is a B horror flick that is over the top, with the
standard, but non offensive acting, and who can forget the fart bomb to end all
fart bombs? But there was something different about this one. I would like to
be able to give you the exact reason I enjoyed this movie, so that you can
decide if that reason coincides with your enjoyment, but, alas, I cannot. All I
can say is just go in with an open mind and sit back and enjoy.

Likeable and detestable characters from start to finish
A good, even if a bit nasty sense of humor throughout
Great production value
